I don't think it would make a difference if the gauge was plumbed in line or deadheaded. The camshaft lobe rod just raises the diaphragm up against the spring at every cam revolution. If the diaphragm did not move,the fuel pump lever just moves up and down on the diaphragm shaft keeping it up against the spring for max pressure.
