Think 9248 is a GTO color, 9300 is Corvette Tuxedo Black

Re: C2 Black Lacquer Paint: DDL-9248 vs DDL-9300

        Hi Gary and Harry,

The original NCRS Volume 16 - Number One - Summer 1989 (Special 15th Anniversary Membership Edition) '53 to '72 Spec Guide I have shows Ditzler code 9300 as Tuxedo Black beginning in 1958 and going thru 1969 (pages 148 to 155).

That same Spec Guide shows Ditzler codes as follows:
        • 9248 as "Black" under the "Trim" column starting in 1960.
        • then 9248 & 9300 in 1962
        • then 9292 under "Interior" for 1963
        • then 9292 as "3 Gloss" and 9248 as "60 Gloss" for 1964 thru 1966
        • 1967 changes "black" to "flat black" (9292) under "3 "Gloss" - keeping 9248 as "60 Gloss". PS - Hood stripe code is 9000 (wonder what the difference was there? - seems to me it s/b the same as exterior black? weird
        • 1968 and 1969 show 9300 with no interior or trim paints indicated
        • 1970 to 1972 have no black color codes listed anywhere - and that's the last grouping of years in that version of the 1st Spec Guide.

I did not find any of these numbers in my 1999 version of the '53 to '67 Spec Guide
Dunno if this helps (or confuses the issue even more?) - or if these numbers have been verified in updates of the Spec Guide or not?
        thx,
        Mark

my guess is the pigment and color were all the same; the different codes related to additives such as solvent content/flattening/glossing/drying agents, etc. plus it keeps the after-market paint guys on their toes
            thx,
            Mark

I've still got a "factory pack" partial quart of DDL-9300 as it was also used on my '76 Cosworth Vega. I'm not familiar with 9248, but it's my understanding that 9300 was GM black from the first acrylic lacquer jobs in the late fifties to the end of Lacquer use circa 1980.

                    Gary,

Best to contact the NCRS paint guru Tom Ames.

                      Gary,

It seemed like a question that the non-official gurus could answer. In any case, I plan to call TCP Global soon to ask about availability and I will ask them.

Gary, I think the chart you posted is for INTERIOR colors. My reason for this theory is the 3% and 60% which are both interior gloss level references. An exterior color would be full gloss. The exterior code should be 9300 which will yield a full gloss spray out.

                        Just my opinion though!!

                            Joe,

In a posting some years ago John Hinckley said that the 60% gloss was considered full gloss, and that was used for the interior items designated as 60% gloss, and left unbuffed. The exterior would use the same 60% gloss paint but of course be buffed.

                              Dave,

The 60% gloss black is for the upper part of the interior side of the door, that frames the vent and side window.
