When I worked for a city, I used to see quite a few of them at the corporation yard when I brought my city car in for gas or service. They must have gone to some wrecking yard.

In any event, I would think that just about all police cars eventually end up in some wrecking yard just due to "old age" rather than a wreck. They've got to go somewhere. However, most old police cars are sold at auction and end up as private vehicles. As such, they are often re-painted and always stripped of most of their police gear.

Tip: to find the "civilianized" old police cars, look for cars with spotlights OR the vestiges of where a spotlight had once resided.

I'm interested in early '63 wheels and their date codes. I've been told that KH didn't start date stamping until about 1/63? Can anyone support that? Has anyone ever seen a '63 wheel dated between 7/62 and 12/62? Thanks

Re: More about 63-64 Corvette steel wheels

        Frank,

        Years ago I owned six 15 X 5 1/2" 63 Corvette wheels dated "1 63" and one wheel dated "2 63". I also once owned a pair of NOS K-H wheels (GM # 3687980) that were stamped "15 X 5 K" and dated "10 53" and "5 53". I also once owned a 60 Chevrolet K-H wheel stamped "14 X 5.00J" and "12 59".

Since 1987 I have never seen a 63 wheel dated in the Fall of 1962 but the 63 Corvette wheels have always been EXTREMELY rare.

December '62 is the earliest I have seen.

Thanks Daniel...great photo of 12/62 date. Are you aware of early cars having wheels w/o date stamps? I have a November '62 car with beautiful KH original wheels with correct stampings, but no date stamps. I've also witnessed the same on earlier cars. Thanks

Re: More about 63-64 Corvette steel wheels

              Frank,

              I have 3 original 65-66 wheels stamped "15 X 15 1/2 JK" with just the number "6" (or maybe it's a "9") without the year.

              I also once owned a 63-64 wheel stamped "15 X 15 1/2 K" with a "6 59" date code. It was identical to my "2 63" wheel. It was NOT a 1959 wheel. In the Fall of 2004 I saw another 63-64 wheel stamped "6 59".

Mistakes were made by employees of Kelsey-Hayes just like everywhere else.

                Hi Frank !

I've stashed a few of these wheels away over the years. I believe I have one with the date you specified. Here's a pic. If there are any details about it you you need, let me know.

I just looked through mine and have several with no dates. I can't say for certain if they came from early cars or not.

I have four 63 wheels and I believe two do not have dates stamped inside. One interesting thing about these two wheels is that the GM stamp that's on the spider is sideways not straight like the other two dated (2/63) wheels I own.

Other than that they look exactly the same, I can post a picture if anyone is interested.

                      Frank,
This reply is late as I have been OOT.
                      I also have 3 1963 rims dated 12 63 as Tom,s are.

Thanks, All ...Is it safe to assume that early '63 vette wheels, prior to 12/62 were not date stamped?

I have a couple '63-'64 wheels that have no dates. But I also have some '65-'66 without dates. So I do not think that this restricted to early '63 wheels.I have various original straight axle wheels that are all dated.I have a set of wheels from a '62 that are dated 5 '62.Hard for me to believe that they did not start dating wheels for the '63 cars until Dec. of 1962.

I'm just curious. Were any of these part numbers actually stamped any where on the wheel?
