John Waggoner emailed all the Chapter webmasters yesterday about that the Chapter websites were restored.

Many of the Chapter websites exceed the 100 meg file limit and need the old files need to be cleaned out.

I've got to admit that I was a little worried about downloading another fix it program on a trial basis that only fixes some things, and then you have to buy the program.
I have been having all these problems with adware popups on all websites, at the top, bottom, and sides of the screen, and also with the text of articles (where the text is colored and underlined and is a link to an ad).

Tried my MacAfee anti-virus, WinSecret Tweak to no avail. So I downloaded that Malwarebytes from the link above. Ran it twice and my problem was solved. If you run it, just make sure you check all the PUP and Adware boxes when the program gives you a report and prompt to remove. I had 57 popups.

It worked so slick, I bought the full version, $25.

It sure beat out the MacAfee that came from my provider. But I still run MacAfee for other items.

John recommends using both AntiMalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Sometimes what AntiMalwareBytes misses SuperAntiSpyware catches.

PUP's often are hard to get rid of. They often reside in a browser's add-on's. The last hack planted PUP's in Internet Explorer. Had to reset IE back to default setting (like it was when it was downloaded, no Favorites, etc.) to finally get rid of the pesky PUP's. ASK toolbar is one of the worst. Never allow the ASK or CONDUIT toolbars.

I tried to run the malware scan but my computer stopped the download saying it contained a virus and was deleted.
Any advice on what I should try next?

Larry you have a VIRUS!!!!!!!!!!! That is what they do. You will have to download your virus protection to a thumb drive or CD and run it from the external device. The virus will prevent you from downloading anything that can attack it, self preservation. You may have to run in protected mode. You will probably need to run rkill first, it will kill the virus in memory so you can attack the virus.

Do a google stating what the message that the virus stated and you will discover what you have. There are a number of virus eratication web sites that can help (Geek Squad or something like that).

A very important prevention tactic is to create a user account with very limited rights and use that to surf the web. If your user account does NOT have access to your Registry, then the virus that you catch will NOT have access to your Regristry. Everytime software is attempted to be installed (like a virus) the system must stop and ask for the admin password. Never give it unless you initiated the install.

No single virus protection scheme can catch all viruses, that's why a combination must be used. rkill, combofix, cleanPC, malwarebytes, Superantispyware are all good programs, but have specific uses and should not be used randomly, but need to reside on your thumb drive.
