Re: C2 value question: auto or 4spd?

    Mike,
Your words are depressing me; the owner of a 1967 327/300 Coupe with Powerglide and no A/C! All kidding aside I find the car very well mannered, smooth and dependable. A real treat to drive and it shows very nicely. Sometimes I do yearn for an extra shift or two (TH350 or 200-R4) but for sunny, Sunday afternoon cruises it is an absolute delight. As to power, for my kind of driving it is more than adequate. My yearly trip to the dragstrip and 4-5 runs (Club event) shows about 15.9 secs @ 87mph. That's not fast but I would not label it a dog. It is bang on what I used to manage with a 1979 L-82/TH350.

Was it cheap to buy? Not cheap per se but certainly less than a convertible, four-speed in comparable condition. What really attracted me to the car was its solid, pristine condition. The former owner actually polished the frame each year. It is that clean. The engine block is NOM but a period-correct 327. Above the block (heads, intake, etc.) is original. The history of that block is not known to me and I can only surmise that someone threw a rod at one point. I enjoy the car very much and have no regrets about the PG. Nor in fact the lack of A/C. In this part of Canada last summer we did not have one day go over 30C (86F).

I have never navel-gazed about getting my money back on sale. But based on real market (not Arizona) prices I certainly wouldn't take a bath.

I know of a person that has a 65 4-speed that sometimes wishes it was a PG. Her Dad is up in the years and insisted in driving the car in a parade, his legs are to short and don't operate the way they should. This car is lucky that the transmission is still operational with all the reported gear grinding I heard about.

Put a 2004R in the car instead of a 700R4. The 2004R has the same dimensions and is a bolt in replacement for a powerglide. In many circles, the 2004R is considered a better transmission with proper modifications. They can't be all bad since 2004R's are run extensively in 9 second turbo Grand National's!!!!

              Mike,
I've never figured out how the gearshift works on those conversions. How does one control L-2-3-4 with a L-D shifter?

If you listen to what the esteemed commentators(?) say on the BJ auction, one is led to believe" if it was a 4 spd, it would have brought in more $". This was mentioned and then shortly came the 70 Barracuda hemi w/ torqueflite for 250K. How do ya figure?

"Shifterworks" offers a "detent" kit to change the shifter handle postitioning on the stock shifter to work with a 2004R. They work very well. It's an easy bolt on change to the stock shifter.

I am currently removing the original powerglide from a 1970 Chevelle convertible and installing a 2004R transmission. A deep first gear and a 0.68 overdrive, the best of both worlds!

Just saw a 66 coupe with a powerglide sell for $73,000 at BJ. I guess if it were a four speed it would have brought $2,000 more huh?
